Death came often for the soldiers of the 8th Virginia. Some died in battle, but most often it came in the form of diseases that were still poorly understood and for which there were no cures. Malaria was the number-one killer. All told, 121 8th Virginia soldiers are known to have died while in service--a number almost equal to two entire companies. The real number is higher than that.

I'm finding so many of my ancestors participated with 8th Virginia, both in the French & Indian and Revolutionary War. Bedel McCormick, Pitman, Ramsey, Steele, Vance. Others not in the 8th were Russell, Hobbs, Henderson. These valiant men fought for what we have today. It is our choice to preserve their memory and keep what we have today.

I am commenting not to the list of dead of the 8th VA but rather to the fact that the 5th g-grandfather of my wife isn't on your rooster of the 8th VA regiment. She is a member of the DAR through him. Ancestor No. A131573 The first record we have, has him as a pvt. in March of 1779, 8th VA regiment, no company given. Then on the roll of men re-enlisted in the 8th as cpl. Geo Hussleman with a bounty due of 200 in dollars. Again, no company listed. Unfortunately he is another of the Rev War vets graves lost to time. All we know is he is buried in Wayne Co. Ohio.

Curtis--I don't see him on the rolls, which probably means he was in the 12th Virginia (which was redesigned the 8th on Sept. 14, 1778). Confusing, but a different regiment.
